Full bio

Daryn was an awkward black sheep of the family. His love for music started as a kid when he wore out a VHS version of Grease recorded off the TV. As most kids, he grew up listening to what his parents like. From New Romantic greats such as Ultravox, Depeche Mode, and Spandau Ballet to Motown legends like Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, Stevie Wonder and the Jackson 5. These were the building blocks of what would go on spark a wide spectrum of musical inspiration His first passion for an instrument was the drums. But with space in short supply, and an undiagnosed ADHD leaving most hobbies unfinished after a few weeks. His parents brushed it off. He went on and on about it, and looked to try something else. Originally he was drawn to guitar by the likes of Brian Molko, Robert Smith and Kevin Shields, but his mum who had been a few years below Sid Vicious at school, said why don’t you try bass.

After a full on hyper-focus and many trips to the music shop later, he got his first Squire P-Bass. As part of the bass rabbit hole, he dove headfirst, and drew inspiration from the likes of Peter Hook, Dan Andriano and Taka Hirose. He started knocking around in jams in garages and sheds trying to hone his skills but it wasn’t until he joined Santonica that he fell into the swing of playing in and band as well as live.

“One of their drummers who was leaving to do join a bigger project put me in touch with Felix. I got an audition with British Beef, and scored the spot as their new bassist. We played a few shows (packing out the Kentish Town Bull and Gate was a shock to my system compared to previous 20 odd people) and with another line up change evolving to Fire in Cairo, our time came to an end. But in this time is where I met Mikee."

When I first heard some Michael Television’s Interloper tracks, it struck a chord. It was everything I loved in music rolled into one, and I had to be part of it. Mikee was the principal bassist, but what I could offer was another pillar to their stage presence, allowing Mikee to lay down some of the sickest hip-hop vox this side of Hammersmith. “

Since Interloper, Daryn has fronted a few bands in UK and Australia, even being featured on Triple J Unearthed.
